    Our special guest and Caribbean Mentor has built an exceptional career in the area of Finance. He is a graduate of the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus, with a degree in Economics; a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Certified Accountants (UK), and he also holds an MBA in Finance from the University of Wales/ Manchester Business School. He has over 25 years experience in finance and banking. He was Chief Executive Officer of the Bank of Butterfield, Barbados. He has served as president of both the Barbados Bankers Association and the Barbados Institute of Banking and Finance. With a special love of sport, our mentor was a Deputy Chairman of the Barbados National Sports Council. He has published and presented several papers on banking and finance, including a presentation on "Managing Banking Crisis" to the World Congress of Accounts held in Paris in October 1997. He has been involved not only in the planning and start-up of new financial institutions but has also been involved in several turnaround situations in the finance industry. In December of 2007, he was appointed Minister in the Ministry of Finance and in March 2009 he was appointed Minister of Trade and Industry in addition to his previous portfolio.     Our special guest and Caribbean Mentor is a high achiever and he has proven this time and time again throughout his life and career. His appetite for success and desire to win was evident when he decided to become a world-class athlete and entered the competitive world of track and field. By the time his athletic career concluded he stood as a record holder and held four medals; two at the 1964 Summer Olympics and two at the 1966 Commonwealth Games. His next challenge would be in the area of academics and career building. Again his desire to win would see him graduate with honors from Yale University with a Masters in Economics. Throughout his career he became an economist, investment banker and entrepreneur. A third aspect of his life where he saw success was in the competitive area of politics which for him spanned fifteen years, from 1981 to 1996, ten of which was spent in Government. Throughout his tenure he held portfolios like Minister of Housing, Minister of Industry and Commerce and culminating as Minister of Finance where he oversaw the flotation of the Trinidad and Tobago dollar. Her career began in the media industry, where she moved from a newspaper reporter to a broadcast journalist and then to create history as the Caribbean’s first female television sportscaster. She is also the only broadcaster to host the country’s top three network television morning shows. Today she is the Executive Director of the Caribbean Anti-Violence Institute (CAVI) and the Renaissance Juvenile Justice Assessment Centre (RJJAC). She has emerged as a powerful voice as she advocates for a best practice criminal justice policy, in particular for child protection, justice for children, gender-responsive interventions for girls, and a trauma-informed criminal justice system. She holds a triple bachelor’s degree, special honors and magna cum laude, in politics, philosophy and media studies with a minor in creative writing. She also holds a Master’s of Science in Education and Rehabilitation Counseling, a Master’s of Arts in Criminal Justice and a Master’s of Arts Certificate in Terrorism Studies. She was honored at City Hall in New York City with a Proclamation from the City of New York for her outstanding contribution to New York’s Caribbean community and by various other international and local organizations.
