Our special guest and Caribbean Mentor has built an exceptional career in the area of Finance. He is a graduate of the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus, with a degree in Economics; a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Certified Accountants (UK), and he also holds an MBA in Finance from the University of Wales/ Manchester Business School. He has over 25 years experience in finance and banking. He was Chief Executive Officer of the Bank of Butterfield, Barbados. He has served as president of both the Barbados Bankers Association and the Barbados Institute of Banking and Finance. With a special love of sport, our mentor was a Deputy Chairman of the Barbados National Sports Council. He has published and presented several papers on banking and finance, including a presentation on "Managing Banking Crisis" to the World Congress of Accounts held in Paris in October 1997. He has been involved not only in the planning and start-up of new financial institutions but has also been involved in several turnaround situations in the finance industry. In December of 2007, he was appointed Minister in the Ministry of Finance and in March 2009 he was appointed Minister of Trade and Industry in addition to his previous portfolio. He is passionate about people’s causes and is not hesitant to represent difficult causes, such as undocumented immigrants. He is guided by his belief in Islam; the religion he converted to about 40 years ago and is considered to be one of the learned elders of the Trinidad and Tobago Muslim Community. Our special guest and Caribbean Mentor is a guru in the area of Agriculture ... he has an extensive career of over 50 years in the field as proof. Just like the plants he studied, he too started off his journey as a little seed in a humble community on the island of a Barbados. Today, that seed has grown into a towering saman tree, armed with degrees in Agricultural Science, Plant Pathology and Management. He was a lecturer, then Senior lecturer at the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of the West Indies, St Augustine from 1971 to 1981. After which, he joined the InterAmerican Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) as a Regional Agricultural specialist for the Caribbean rising to the post of Director General for the Institute in 2001 and serving in that capacity for ten years. He is the first and only person from the English speaking-Caribbean to serve as Director General of the IICA. He also served as IICA’s Representative in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago and Executive Secretary of CARILAC, a program aimed at fostering cooperation in agriculture among Caribbean and Latin American Countries. He is recognized for his administrative, technical and institutional leadership in international agricultural development, having worked in the U.S.A, Italy, Kenya, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica and Mexico. He thrives on challenges and tough assignments and believes that work should be fulfilling and rewarding. Her career began as a lawyer but throughout her journey she has acquired numerous skills and expertise. Today she is the Deputy CEO of Operations and Administration at First Citizens Bank. Her experience and training is wide-ranging covering areas such as banking and finance, corporate governance, banking operations, information technology, marketing, corporate security, corporate communications and human resource management. She is a holder of a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of the West Indies and the holder of a Master of Laws Degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science. She also holds a Legal Education Certificate from the Hugh Wooding Law School from which she graduated as the most outstanding student. She has been serving at the executive management levels since 1986. She has chaired two Boards, one in the Energy sector and one in the Arts and Entertainment Industry. She is also leading the regional Group in Client Experience Management. She holds a BSc. in Industrial Management and an MSc in Management Studies: Advanced Marketing, from the University of the West Indies.
