Our special guest and Caribbean Mentor has built an exceptional career in the area of Finance. He is a graduate of the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus, with a degree in Economics; a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Certified Accountants (UK), and he also holds an MBA in Finance from the University of Wales/ Manchester Business School. He has over 25 years experience in finance and banking. He was Chief Executive Officer of the Bank of Butterfield, Barbados. He has served as president of both the Barbados Bankers Association and the Barbados Institute of Banking and Finance. With a special love of sport, our mentor was a Deputy Chairman of the Barbados National Sports Council. He has published and presented several papers on banking and finance, including a presentation on "Managing Banking Crisis" to the World Congress of Accounts held in Paris in October 1997. He has been involved not only in the planning and start-up of new financial institutions but has also been involved in several turnaround situations in the finance industry. In December of 2007, he was appointed Minister in the Ministry of Finance and in March 2009 he was appointed Minister of Trade and Industry in addition to his previous portfolio. Her career began as a lawyer but throughout her journey she has acquired numerous skills and expertise. Today she is the Deputy CEO of Operations and Administration at First Citizens Bank. Her experience and training is wide-ranging covering areas such as banking and finance, corporate governance, banking operations, information technology, marketing, corporate security, corporate communications and human resource management. She is a holder of a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of the West Indies and the holder of a Master of Laws Degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science. She also holds a Legal Education Certificate from the Hugh Wooding Law School from which she graduated as the most outstanding student. She has been serving at the executive management levels since 1986. She has chaired two Boards, one in the Energy sector and one in the Arts and Entertainment Industry. Throughout her career she has been a Director on 25 Boards and currently sits on the Boards of publicly listed companies in St Lucia and Barbados and on various Boards with in Trinidad and Tobago. She has delivered several presentations at local and regional conferences and has also published articles within her areas of expertise. She is a mother, an author and an advocate for women. She also served as the first female President of the American Chamber of Commerce of Trinidad and Tobago and the Bankers’ Association of Trinidad and Tobago, and she also chaired the Caribbean Group of Banking Supervisors. She has served the country as a director on several State Boards and as a representative on other National committees and was inducted into the Hall of Excellence at St. Joseph’s Convent P.O.S, in recognition of her outstanding achievements in business. In 2014 she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws (LLD) Currently she is the Chief Executive Officer and the Secretary to the Board at the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce – a position she took up in January 2010.
