Our special guest and Caribbean Mentor is a guru in the area of Agriculture ... he has an extensive career of over 50 years in the field as proof. Just like the plants he studied, he too started off his journey as a little seed in a humble community on the island of a Barbados. Today, that seed has grown into a towering saman tree, armed with degrees in Agricultural Science, Plant Pathology and Management. He was a lecturer, then Senior lecturer at the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of the West Indies, St Augustine from 1971 to 1981. After which, he joined the InterAmerican Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) as a Regional Agricultural specialist for the Caribbean rising to the post of Director General for the Institute in 2001 and serving in that capacity for ten years. He is the first and only person from the English speaking-Caribbean to serve as Director General of the IICA. He also served as IICA’s Representative in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago and Executive Secretary of CARILAC, a program aimed at fostering cooperation in agriculture among Caribbean and Latin American Countries. He is recognized for his administrative, technical and institutional leadership in international agricultural development, having worked in the U.S.A, Italy, Kenya, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica and Mexico. He thrives on challenges and tough assignments and believes that work should be fulfilling and rewarding. Currently living in Beijing as Barbados' Ambassador to China, he is an author, a husband and a father of five. Ladies and Gentlemen…Caribbean Nation…Let’s meet Dr. Chelston W.D Brathwaite.
